Good to know
Calculating an exact age is deceptively fiddly because months have different lengths. This tool borrows days from the previous month and months from the previous year when needed, matching the way people intuitively count — so someone born on the 31st is handled sensibly even in a month that ends on the 30th. The result is a clean years/months/days breakdown rather than a raw day total.
The leap-year edge case to know about is February 29. People born on that date have no birthday in common years, so the tool defaults their annual milestone to February 28 for the "next birthday" countdown. Every calculation runs in your browser's local time zone, which is exactly right for a birthday — the day you were born does not shift because you traveled.
Beyond the headline age, the totals in weeks, days, hours, and minutes make this useful for milestone planning and fun facts, and setting the target date into the future tells you how old someone will be at a wedding or graduation. If you instead need the gap between two arbitrary dates — say a project start and end — the date difference calculator is the better fit.
Frequently asked questions
- How is age computed when birthday hasn't happened yet this year?
- The same way we informally count age — your birthday this year hasn't yet rolled over, so you're still the previous age. The number of months and days fills in the rest.
- What about leap years?
- Leap years are handled correctly. February 29 birthdays default to celebrating on Feb 28 in non-leap years for the 'next birthday' calculation.
- Can I calculate age on a future date?
- Yes — change the 'calculate age on' field to any date in the future. Useful for figuring out how old someone will be at an event.
- Are dates uploaded anywhere?
- No — every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
- Does it work across timezones?
- Calculations use the browser's local timezone, which is what you want for a birthday calculation. The result is the same regardless of the time of day.
