Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate a 10% or 15% tip?
- Pick the preset (10% or 15%) or type the percentage. The tool multiplies the bill by tip% / 100 and adds it to the bill — the "Tip" line is your gratuity, the "Total" line is what's owed.
- How do I split a bill including tip?
- Set "Split between" to the number of people. The tool divides the total (bill + tip) by that number — the "Per person" line is each person's share.
- What's a normal tip per country?
- Common defaults: US 18–22% at a sit-down restaurant; Canada 15–20%; UK 10–12.5% (often added as service); Western Europe 5–10% if not already on the bill; Japan and Korea no tip is expected. Adjust the percentage to match local custom.
- Can I round to whole dollars or euros?
- Toggle "Round each share up" — the per-person amount rounds up to the next whole unit so collecting cash is easy and the server doesn't lose out on coins.
- What's the difference between service charge and tip?
- A service charge is automatically added by the restaurant and is not optional; a tip is voluntary. If a service charge is already on the bill, an additional tip is optional and usually smaller.
- Can I compare multiple tip percentages?
- Yes — change the percentage and the result updates instantly, so flipping between 15%, 18% and 20% takes one click.
- How do I tip on a VAT-inclusive bill?
- Convention varies. In Europe most people tip on the gross (VAT-inclusive) amount; in the US, sales tax is added on top of menu prices and most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. The calculator uses whichever amount you enter.
- How much does each person pay when split?
- Total ÷ number of people. With rounding on, each person's share rounds up to the next whole currency unit, which can leave a tiny extra tip — usually welcome.
- Can I enter a custom percentage?
- Yes — the percentage field accepts any number, including decimals like 12.5 or 17.5. Presets are just shortcuts.
- Does it work offline?
- Yes. Once the page is loaded, the calculation runs locally in your browser — no network call is needed.
