Open Graph is a small, stable vocabulary — og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url and og:type cover the overwhelming majority of real-world previews. Facebook created the protocol, but LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, Pinterest and most fediverse servers now read the same tags, which is why getting them right benefits far more than one network.
The single most common mistake is the image. Aim for 1200×630 pixels (the 1.91:1 ratio these tags describe) and keep it under about 5 MB; anything smaller than 200 px on a side is often dropped entirely, and a mismatched ratio gets letterboxed or cropped through the middle. Always use an absolute HTTPS URL for both og:image and og:url — relative paths silently fail because the scraper has no page context to resolve them against.
Scrapers cache aggressively. If you ship a fix and the old preview persists, run the page through Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to force a re-fetch, rather than assuming your tags are wrong. Slack and WhatsApp respect the refreshed cache once the authoritative platforms have re-crawled.
Open Graph and Twitter's card tags overlap but aren't interchangeable. Ship both: generate the twitter:* set with the Twitter Card Generator so X renders a proper large-image card while everyone else falls back to your OG tags.
