X reads its own twitter:* meta tags to decide how a shared link expands into a card. The type you choose drives the layout: summary shows a small square thumbnail beside the text, while summary_large_image gives a full-width banner above the title — the modern default for articles and landing pages where the image does the selling.
Image minimums are a hard floor, not a suggestion. A summary card wants at least 144 px square; a large-image card needs at least 300×157 and looks best around 1200×628 at roughly a 1.91:1 ratio. Fall below the threshold and the card silently degrades to a tiny thumbnail. Keep the file a JPG, PNG, WebP or non-animated GIF under 5 MB, and remember the image URL must be absolute HTTPS.
Twitter cards and Open Graph tags coexist and it's normal to ship both. X will fall back to og:title and og:image when a twitter-specific tag is missing, and most other platforms ignore the twitter tags entirely — so the two sets together give you clean previews everywhere.
