Converting HTML to Markdown is the right move when you want portable, diff-friendly source that renders identically across GitHub, a static-site generator, Notion, or Obsidian. The tool keeps the structural bones — headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, blockquotes, and GFM tables — while discarding the presentational chrome (classes, inline styles, <span> wrappers, font colors) that Markdown has no way to express.
That stripping is a feature, not a bug: pasting rich text copied from a web page or a Word document usually drags along a mess of nested spans and style attributes, and this collapses it to clean prose. It is the standard way to migrate legacy CMS content into a Markdown-based publishing pipeline without hand-editing every article.
A couple of things won't survive. Tables with merged cells (rowspan/colspan) flatten, because Markdown tables are strictly rectangular, and any layout that relied on divs and CSS grid becomes a flat sequence of blocks. Image tags are converted to Markdown links that still point at the original src, so remember to bring your own asset hosting — the images themselves are not downloaded or rewritten.
