It is also handy for pulling poster-frame candidates for a video player or for grabbing a still to use as a social preview image.
The thumbnails come out at the video's native resolution as JPG at 90% quality, so a 4K source produces large stills. If you are using them as previews or uploading them somewhere with a size budget, run the output through an image compressor or resize afterward — a poster frame rarely needs to be full 4K.
Browser codec support is the usual sticking point. MP4 with H.264 decodes almost everywhere, but many MOV files use codecs that only Safari handles, so a clip that plays fine in QuickTime may extract blank frames elsewhere. If a video refuses to yield thumbnails, transcode it to MP4 first with the video compressor and try again.
One subtlety of seeking: browsers snap to the nearest keyframe, so on heavily compressed footage the captured frame may be a fraction of a second off the requested timestamp. For a rough index that is fine; for frame-exact extraction you would need a desktop tool like ffmpeg.
