This tool encodes a standard mailto: URI, the same scheme every email link on the web uses. Scanning it opens the phone's default mail app with the recipient, subject and body pre-filled, so the user only has to review and send. That makes it well suited to printed collateral — a support poster, a conference badge, a "report a problem here" sticker — where typing an address by hand is error-prone.
Keep the payload short. A mailto URI percent-encodes spaces and punctuation, so a long subject and body inflate the QR's data quickly, forcing a denser grid that's harder to scan from a distance or on cheap paper. If you find yourself packing a paragraph in, link to a form or landing page instead and let that page carry the detail.
Multiple recipients, CC and BCC are all expressible in the mailto standard (comma-separated in the relevant fields), but every extra address adds length — reserve them for cases that genuinely need them. Note that pre-filled body text is a convenience, not a security boundary: the recipient sees and can freely edit everything before sending.
If your goal is instant two-way contact rather than a composed email, an SMS QR code is often the lower-friction choice for phone-first audiences.
