A WiFi QR code encodes a compact plain-text string in the form WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;;. That's it — no app, no cloud service, no account. iOS (since iOS 11) and Android (since 10) recognize the pattern natively from the camera and offer a one-tap join, which is why laminating one by the door is such a reliable way to onboard guests.
Two fields matter most. The encryption type must match your router — almost always WPA/WPA2 today, occasionally the legacy WEP, or None for a genuinely open network. And the SSID and password are case-sensitive, so a single wrong capital letter produces a code that scans perfectly but fails to connect. If your password contains a semicolon, comma, backslash or quote, those are the special characters the format escapes internally — verify the finished code before printing a batch.
For hidden networks, mark the SSID as hidden; otherwise the phone won't find the network even after reading the correct credentials. A common café or Airbnb pattern is a guest network with its own name and password, so a printed code never exposes the primary LAN.
Because the code is static — it carries the credentials directly — it keeps working forever without touching any server, but it also means rotating the password requires reprinting. Before you commit to a laminated sign, confirm it round-trips cleanly with the QR Code Reader.
