Frequently asked questions
- What is AVIF and why should I use it?
- AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format derived from the AV1 video codec. It typically produces files 30-50% smaller than JPG and 20% smaller than WebP at equivalent visual quality, with both lossy and lossless modes plus alpha support.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser via the canvas API. Your image never leaves your device.
- Which browsers can encode AVIF?
- Chrome, Edge and Brave (any recent version) can both read and write AVIF. Firefox 113+ also encodes. Safari can read AVIF (16+) but can't yet write it — we'll show a warning if your browser can't encode.
- What quality level should I pick?
- 70 is a great default — visually identical to JPG at quality 90 but roughly half the size. Drop to 50 for thumbnails, push to 90 for archival. Below 30 you'll start seeing blocking artifacts on detailed photos.
- Will AVIF preserve transparency?
- Yes — AVIF supports a full alpha channel just like PNG and WebP. Transparent PNGs convert to AVIF without flattening.
- Where can I display AVIF images?
- All modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari 16+, Firefox 93+) read AVIF, so they're safe to use directly on the web with a JPG fallback. Most photo viewers on macOS Ventura+ and Windows 11 also display AVIF natively.
- Can I batch-convert multiple images?
- Not in this tool yet — convert one image at a time. The conversion is fast (<1 s for typical photos), so a handful of files is quick to do back-to-back.
- Will AVIF reduce my page load time?
- Yes, dramatically. Switching JPG hero images to AVIF cuts payloads by 30-50%, which is one of the cheapest Core Web Vitals wins for image-heavy sites.
- Does AVIF support animation?
- Yes (AVIS), but this tool only converts still images. For animated GIF replacements, MP4 or WebM is usually a better fit — see our GIF to MP4 tool.
- Is AVIF lossless or lossy?
- AVIF supports both. This tool encodes lossy AVIF — for lossless you'd need a higher quality setting (95-100), at which point the file gets larger than the original PNG and you lose AVIF's main advantage.
