Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between this and the freeform Crop Image tool?
- This tool snaps to a fixed ratio (1:1, 16:9, etc.) and lets you pick a 9-position anchor. The freeform Crop Image tool gives you a draggable rectangle for pixel-perfect manual control. Use this one when you know the target ratio and want a one-click crop.
- Which aspect ratio should I use?
- 1:1 for Instagram feed, 4:5 for Instagram portrait posts (most efficient feed slot), 9:16 for Stories / Reels / TikTok / Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube and 1080p video, 3:2 for DSLR landscape, 21:9 for cinematic banners.
- What does the anchor do?
- It picks which part of your photo survives the crop. 'Center' is the default and works for most photos. 'Top' keeps faces in headshots; 'Bottom' is useful when your subject is in the lower half.
- Will it upscale my image?
- No — it only crops. Output dimensions are always smaller than or equal to the source.
- Are my images uploaded?
- No. Cropping happens on a canvas in your browser. The image stays on your device.
- Can I set a custom ratio like 7:5?
- Yes — pick 'Custom (W:H)' and enter any width-to-height ratio. The tool computes the largest matching rectangle that fits.
- Will JPG output keep transparency?
- JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Pick PNG or WebP to keep transparent backgrounds.
- What happens to the EXIF data?
- Re-encoding through canvas drops EXIF (orientation, GPS, camera info). If you need to keep EXIF, use a desktop tool like ExifTool — there's no browser API to preserve it through canvas yet.
- Why do my Instagram posts look square cropped on my profile grid?
- Instagram thumbnails are always 1:1 even when the post is 4:5 portrait. Crop to 1:1 here if you want to preview exactly what your grid will look like.
- Is this free?
- Yes — completely free, no signup, no watermark.
