The extractor downsamples your image and buckets pixels by color, then surfaces the eight most-common buckets by area. That area-weighting is the key to why it's useful for brand work: a color that fills a large flat region — a logo's fill, a hero background — ranks above a scattering of anti-aliased edge pixels, so the result reflects the colors a viewer actually perceives as dominant.
Expect the returned hexes to be close to, not identical to, the source. Quantizing to coarser color steps is deliberate: it merges the dozens of near-identical shades that JPEG compression and anti-aliasing produce into a single clean swatch. That trade-off is ideal for capturing a brand's palette but means you shouldn't rely on it for pixel-exact color matching.
Feed it the cleanest source you can. A flat vector logo or a solid-color screenshot yields crisp, confident swatches; a busy photograph returns a muddier, less actionable set because there's no dominant region to lock onto. If a brand uses a subtle accent that occupies little area, it may fall outside the top eight — crop to the region containing it and re-run.
