The harmonies here are not arbitrary — they are the classic color-theory relationships, generated by rotating your base color's hue around the wheel in HSL space. A complementary pair sits opposite (180 degrees apart) for maximum contrast; analogous colors are neighbors that feel calm and cohesive; triadic spreads three points evenly for a balanced, vivid set; and split-complementary and tetradic offer richer combinations with a bit more nuance.
A practical rule keeps palettes from looking chaotic: let one color dominate, use a second as support, and reserve the highest-contrast harmony as an accent for calls to action. Analogous schemes are the safe default for backgrounds and large surfaces; complementary and triadic are best used sparingly, where you actually want the eye to land.
