Picking the right symbology matters more than most people expect, because retail and logistics formats each carry strict rules. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the barcodes on consumer products and require a globally registered GS1 company prefix — you cannot invent your own and expect a store scanner to accept it. Code 128 and Code 39, by contrast, are free-form: they encode arbitrary text or numbers and are ideal for internal labels, asset tags and shipping documents where no registry is involved.
The retail formats include a built-in check digit — the final digit is a checksum computed from the others, which lets scanners catch misreads. That is why EAN-13 wants 12 or 13 digits and rejects the wrong count: supply twelve and the tool computes the thirteenth for you, or supply your own and it validates it. ITF-14, used on shipping cartons, always needs an even number of digits because it encodes them in interleaved pairs.
Output here is SVG, which is the right choice for anything printed: vector bars stay razor-sharp at any size, and print quality hinges on that crispness plus adequate quiet zones. Avoid scaling a rasterized barcode up, since blurry bar edges are a leading cause of scan failures.
