A sitemap is a discovery aid, not a ranking lever. It tells crawlers which URLs you consider canonical and worth visiting, which is most valuable for large sites, freshly launched pages, or content buried deep in the link graph. It does not force indexing — Google still decides page by page — so treat it as a hint rather than a guarantee.
Stay inside the format limits: a single sitemap holds at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Cross either boundary and you split the list into multiple files referenced from a sitemap index. List only URLs you actually want indexed — 200-status, canonical, non-blocked pages. Including redirects, 404s, or URLs disallowed in robots.txt just wastes crawl budget and muddies the signal.
Every URL should be absolute and match its canonical form exactly, including the scheme, the www choice and the trailing-slash convention. A sitemap that lists http:// or non-canonical variants sends contradictory signals against your canonical tags.
Once the file is live at your domain root, do two things: submit it in Google Search Console, and add a Sitemap: line to your robots.txt so every crawler finds it. After that, crawlers re-fetch it automatically whenever it changes — there's no need to resubmit on every edit.
