Frequently asked questions
- Can you crack a PDF I don't know the password for?
- No — and you shouldn't want us to. This tool removes the password when you can already open the file; it's for your own PDFs whose password you've remembered or know. Cracking other people's encrypted PDFs is both technically infeasible (qpdf needs the password) and illegal in most jurisdictions.
- Why does this tool need to upload my PDF?
- Browser PDF libraries can read encrypted files but can't reliably re-save them without the encryption layer when AES-256 is involved. We use qpdf on the server, which is the reference implementation everyone trusts. The trade-off is honest: a brief server round-trip in exchange for a guaranteed, lossless unlock.
- How long do you keep my unlocked PDF?
- We delete the input and the output from server disk and memory within 10 minutes. We never log file contents — only request size and outcome for billing-fraud detection.
- Will the unlocked PDF look exactly like the original?
- Yes. qpdf re-writes only the encryption dictionary; every page, image, font, annotation and bookmark is preserved byte-for-byte.
- Are there file-size limits?
- Yes — uploads up to 50 MB. Most password-protected reports are well under 5 MB; if your file is larger you can usually compress it first with our PDF compressor and unlock the smaller copy.
