The gap between two dates has more than one right answer, which is why this tool reports several at once. The calendar breakdown (years, months, days) is what you'd say out loud — "2 years and 3 months" — while the total-days and total-weeks figures are what you need for interest accrual, subscription billing, or counting how long a project actually ran.
The month-and-day breakdown follows the same borrowing convention as Excel's DATEDIF: when the end day is earlier in the month than the start day, it borrows days from the previous month, then borrows months from the year. That is why a span can read as "1 month, 30 days" in one case and "2 months" in another that looks similar — month lengths differ, and the arithmetic reflects that rather than smoothing it over.
The weekdays-only toggle counts Monday–Friday and ignores public holidays, since holidays vary by country. If you need holidays excluded for a specific nation — for an SLA or a statutory deadline — use the working days calculator, which layers on holiday calendars for 20 countries.
