Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a PDF to a Word document?
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area (or click to choose a file), then press Convert. After a few seconds you'll get a downloadable .docx that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages.
- Will my formatting be preserved?
- Most text, headings, lists and embedded images come across well. Complex multi-column layouts and decorative styling sometimes need a quick clean-up. Vector logos and drawings may be rasterised — the visual stays the same, but you can't recolour them by clicking.
- Why is this conversion done on a server, not in the browser?
- Producing a faithful Word document from a PDF requires a real document engine that doesn't fit in a browser. We use a headless LibreOffice on our server, process the file in memory, and delete it within minutes — see the amber notice above and our privacy policy.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes — files up to 25 MB are supported, and each conversion is capped at 60 seconds. Larger PDFs should be split first using our Split PDF tool, converted in pieces, then merged back together in Word.
- Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
- Scanned pages come through as images embedded in the document — the text inside the scan is not made editable. To get editable text from a scan, run our PDF OCR tool first (which adds a searchable text layer) and then convert the result here.
- Are my files stored or read by anyone?
- No. Your file is processed in memory, the result is streamed back, and the temporary copy is deleted right after. Nobody at our end opens, stores, shares or analyses your file.
- Is the conversion free?
- Yes — there is no fee, no signup and no watermark. We pay for the server out of the ad revenue from the rest of the site.
- Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
- No. Encrypted PDFs need to be unlocked first in your PDF reader (open it, save without a password) and then converted here.
- Does it work on mobile?
- Yes. The page works in mobile Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Pick the PDF from Files or Drive, convert, and the .docx is saved to your downloads.
- What's the difference between PDF to Word and PDF to Text?
- PDF to Word produces a fully formatted .docx with images and layout. PDF to Text gives you a plain .txt file with just the words — useful for analysis or reuse, but no formatting.
